Covid has put a serious strain on our relationships. People have opposing opinions about how careful you need to be, whether or not you should wear a mask, whether or not they believe in what's happening at all -- and so much more.
Don't let these differences destroy your relationships. I KNOW how challenging it can be. I am dealing with these same differences. It is tempting to push away those with opposing views but we are stronger together. If you had a strong relationship going into covid, fight for it! Don't let something like this tear you apart. And this goes for all relationships, not just love relationships. I see this taking its toll on friends, families, spouses, co-parenting situations and more. Here are some tips on how to find a common ground with those who matter in your life. 1) Put your relationship above your differences. Commit yourself to the relationship and it working out no matter what. Decide the relationship is more important and refuse to argue the details (especially when you know it won't make a difference). Instead, stay focused on common ground. 2) Focus on what you DO HAVE IN COMMON. What CAN you agree upon? Even when people differ, there's always a common ground. Especially, when you're committed to things being positive between you. 3) Be empathetic. You may not agree with the level of fear a person has over this but realize they probably don't agree with your level of non concern either. Be respectful of the other person and their beliefs. You don't have to agree. Find something you are both comfortable with. For example, maybe you're comfortable with indoor events with many people but your partner (or anyone you have a relationship with) isn't. Are there events you can attend that are outdoors where both parties feel safe? When you get determined that your relationship will weather this storm, you start finding solutions instead of problems. Put your focus there. This isn't going to last forever, even though it feels like it some days. You CAN come out of this stronger, knowing that you and your people are rock solid! You've got this! |
